Dealing With An Allergy Skin Rash
Just when you thought your allergies couldn’t get worse, you find yourself with a rash. You’re not alone – although, when covered in bumps, redness, and scaly skin, you may wish you were. Still, an allergy skin rash is no cause for embarrassment. These common conditions aren’t your fault – and can be lived with, and without.
Allergic contact dermatitis is often what comes to mind when thinking about an allergy skin rash. This skin rash occurs when your skin is exposed to an irritating substance over a period of time, resulting in itchy, red, and swollen skin. You also may see blisters and scaling. Allergic contact dermatitis is different from irritant contact dermatitis, which can arise in anyone, as a result of overexposure to harsh irritants like laundry soap or harsh cleaners. Allergic contact dermatitis is caused by substances such as rubber or nickel, which cause an allergy skin rash in some people, while creating no problems for others.
Food allergies also can create an allergy skin rash, although this is rare in adults. This type of skin rash usually arises in babies and young children, whose skin can react badly to foods such as nuts, milk, wheat, and other foods that people are often allergic to.
Other allergy skin rashes are caused by substances that are less pure, though as easy to come into contact with, as foods. Cosmetics commonly cause allergies that leave skin irritated, red, and uncomfortable. Common culprits include synthetic fragrances, face, hair, and skincare products that contain them, and nail polishes.
A skin rash can also be the first sign that you don’t respond well to harsh substances. That may seem to be stating the obvious, but ingredients such as formaldehyde frequently find their way into fabrics, plastic bottles – even some types of paper.
Once you’ve discovered that you’re suffering from an allergy skin rash, the best way to deal with the problem is to avoid the offending substance. A visit to your doctor can help you narrow down what’s causing the problem – and give you relief to ease the discomfort.
